Hawk Eagles of Java

Wider Implication: 'Open' zoos

Hawk Eagles of Java

The worst thing they could do was to make the Java Hawk Eagle the ‘National Bird’. In a country where status is everything, the black market price leapt.

At Taman Safari, a Safari Park near Bogore, Java, a small number of Java Hawk Eagles are held. Now and again wild Eagles have been seen on the cage roof in an attempt to pair with the captive birds.

CW has opened discussions with the conservationist responsible for reversing the decline of the Mauritius Kestrel, to act as specialist for this project. If the zoo, behind its perimeter fence, could provide a safe nesting site for this seriously threatened species, it could introduce a new dimension of ‘open zoos’ for in-range breeding and conservation. Other protected areas exist in Java that could provide refuge and survival for the national bird.
