As peace and security returns to DR Congo, the mining companies arrive to claim their concessions. Wholesale open cast mining begins, with entire ranges of hills due to disappear in as little as eight years – together with their endemic, metal-tolerant flora.
CW has opened negotiations between the Faculty for Agriculture, University of Lubumbashi, for which it acts as Technical Adviser, and Lubumbashi Zoological Park.
This project has been proposed as a pilot for a new collaboration between the zoo and botanic garden sectors. Brokered by Conservation Works, the new intitiative is seen as one way for the two sectors to w0rk together for the conservation of all species, whether flora or fauna.
