Chimpanzees of DR Congo
Wider Implication: New purpose for old zoos

All over the world there can be found overgrown botanic gardens and derelict zoos often recalling a colonial history, usually in the centre of built up areas and affording new opportunities for conservation, welfare and education.
Franck and Roxane Chantereau decided to make a stand against the trafficking of chimpanzee infants through Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Individuals from the responsible authorities show extraordinary courage as they seize animals from influential householders and from soldiers on trains heading south for Zambia and South Africa.
To facilitate the confiscations, an NGO, JACK*, and refuge centre has been established in an old bear enclosure at the zoo. Quarantine and night-time cages are assembled and there is a permanent staff of six. Conservation Works is Conservation Adviser to JACK and a Consortium of Government and para- statal organisations.
