Lions of Addis Ababa

Wider Implication: Mobilising zoo conservation - in range

In the centre of Addis Ababa, lives a group of 16 lions. Although they are caged with no environmental enrichment, they appear to be in good condition, have mates and produce cubs.

These are not common lions. They are the descendants from the private collection of Emperor Haile Selassie.

Working with their Ethiopian custodians, Conservation Works has established that the lions are not ‘described’ in science, their origin is unknown, there has been no field research.

Seeing a unique opportunity to represent wildlife conservation in Ethiopia, while improving immeasurably the lives of these beautiful cats, CW recommends the first, best step – a Process Workshop, called by the Wildlife Conservation Department, Ethiopia.
